O. W. Ziegler, mortician, is a highly esteemed business man of Zelienople, and a member of a family that has long been connected with the history of Butler County. He was born near Harmony, in Butler County, August 12, 1874, and is the son of H. D. and Louisa (Moritz) Ziegler.
H. D. Ziegler, deceased, was a native of Butler County, and the son of Andrew Ziegler, pioneer funeral director of the county. Andrew Ziegler was a small boy when his parents came to Butler County and settled in Lancaster Township. He was a carpenter and later engaged in the undertaking business, making his own caskets. His son, H. D. Ziegler, was associated with him in the undertaking business and in later life he conducted a furniture and hardware business also. He died about 1900 and his wife, who was of French descent, died in 1922 at the age of 69 years. To H. D. and Louisa (Moritz) Ziegler the following children were born: Pearce, died at the age of thirty-nine years ; Harry A., lives in Canada ; O. W., the subject of this sketch ; Mrs. Pearl Sharrer, lives at Zelienople; Clarence, lives at Zelienople; and two children died in infancy.
O. W. Ziegler grew up in Lancaster Township and attended the district schools. He was fifteen years old when he entered his father's store and undertaking establishment, with which he has since been identified. This business, founded more than eighty-five years ago, is perhaps the oldest of its kind in the county.
On October 8, 1902, Mr. Ziegler was married to Miss Mary Elizabeth Shanor, the daughter of Reverend and Agnes (Fisher) Shanor, natives of Butler, and now residents of Sewickley, Pennsylvania. Mr. and Mrs. Ziegler have four children: Henry O., is associated in business with his father; Arthur S., attending Thiel College, Greenville, Pennsylvania; Ruth Elizabeth and Ralph, both at home.
Mr. Ziegler and his family hold membership in the English Lutheran Church, and he is affiliated with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Knights of Pythias, Knights of Malta, Royal Arcanum and the Elks. He is a director of the Pythian Home Association of western Pennsylvania.
